Abstract:
The essay describes the main features of the 'metaphysical style' of perception and representation through comparison between the paintings of Giorgio De Chirico and the movies of both Abbas Kiarostami and Yasujirō Ozu. The essay concentrates, in particular, on two aspects: the geometrization of the visual scene and the uncanny depiction of objects. In this framework, the essay proposes a close-reading of some of the most debated 'props' in the three artists' visual compositions: a glove in De Chirico's _Chant d'amour_ (1914), a vase in Ozu's _Late Spring_, and a spray can in Kiarostami's _Close-Up_ (1990).
