Abstract:
The article discusses the category of Catholic Enlightenment, which emerged in the context of an academic historiography with strongly militant characters and supported by the hegemonic force of the English language. The concept is not new, as its current supporters follow in the footsteps of the Katholische Aufklärung scholars. However, while Katholische Aufklärung referred and refers to the movement of "enlightened Catholicism" linked to writers such as Ludovico Antonio Muratori, recently the “new” category establishes a more direct identification between Catholicism and Enlightenment and proposes a revision of the link between modernity and secularization. Thus, in this historiography, the path that led to the contemporary world in the West has been rethought in a general way, focusing on the importance of the religious dimension. The article identifies the problems of this interpretation, showing its ideological implications.
