Abstract:
This work examines two songs from the Kurdish oral tradition, Mem û Zîn and Kelaê Dimdim. We will first introduce the complex theme of local denominations of vocal forms in contemporary Kurdistan, through a semi-systematic analysis of pertinent literature, then the concepts of oicotype and allomotivic analysis will be discussed. Mem û Zîn oycotipes will be examined as well as several versions of beytê Dimdim performed by semi-professional dengbêj and recorded during a field research in Iraqi Kurdistan. We will take in consideration textual aspects (morphology and formulas), narrative stereotypes (themes or motifs also diffused in other oral literature repertoires), specific formulaic repertoires, melodic models and performative aspects. The results allows to confirm the existence of a bahdini-oicotype. In this work we also extend Chyet’s first formulation of Kurdish songs oycotipes in order to show that, above and beyond morphological analysis, formulaic analysis too can help identify the features of an oicotype.
