Abstract:
The paper presents the main stages of the debate concerning the
immateriality of the soul in 18th-century German philosophy, with
a special focus on three central moments. The first one is Wolff’s
attempt to provide a rational demonstration of immortality in the
frame of his rational psychology; the second moment concerns the
criticisms of such a claim raised by Meier and Crusius, and their
‘moral’ approach to the question; the third one considers the presence
of the issue in Hißmann’s psychological materialism, and its
theological implications.
