HABITUS aims to investigate the role played by habits in our artistic and aesthetic practices and experiences employing an interdisciplinary approach encompassing philosophy, empirical research, and qualitative analysis to achieve 3 key objectives: 1. Develop a theoretical framework to elucidate the role of habits in shaping aesthetic experiences (AEs) within art and daily life. Drawing from historical and philosophical perspectives, HABITUS aims to clarify how habits influence artistic and everyday behavior, shape cultural relationships, and regulate interactions with the environment. It will then investigate the transformative potential of specific aesthetic habits (AHs) in promoting behavoral plasticity, adaptability to specific situations, and our improvisational abilities in art and daily life. 2. Conduct psychological and neuroscientific experiments to empirically validate the theoretical framework. These experiments will explore the connections between habits and aesthetic pleasure, challenging assumptions about habits stifling creativity and showing how specific AHs can enhance psychological well-being and encourage personal and social flourishing. 3. Apply the concept of AHs to a wide range of artistic and aesthetic practices such as visual & performing arts, cinema, design, fashion, and food. Through qualitative research we will investigate how habits shape these practices and, reciprocally, how these practices impact habitual behavior. Our focus will also be on the role played by artificial intelligence in shaping these practices and the function that AHs could have in liberating them from overly rigid behavioral patterns. HABITUS will extend its influence beyond academia to inform public policies and raise collective awareness, by disseminating its findings through academic events, workshops, conferences, publications and actions of public engagement. It will offer to the scientific community, policy-makers, and the general public insights into decision-making processes and behaviors, emphasizing the role of AHs in navigating social and environmental uncertainties and embrace healthier habits. Ultimately, HABITUS aims to advance our understanding of habits and their impact on society, as well as on individual and collective welfare.
