Alpine Poultry and fish farming rely heavily on imported soy-based feed, most of it from South America, contributing to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, high greenhouse gas emissions, and global market dependency. At the same time, large quantities of regional organic waste remain underutilised. The Alpine agri-food sector lacks locally adapted, circular feed alternatives and faces fragmented regulations, low awareness, and limited capacity to implement innovative practices.
This project addresses the shared Alpine challenge by turning food and agricultural waste into insect based feed proteins for poultry and fish, replacing high-impact imports and closing nutrient loops.
The project’s overall objective is to test and scale insect-based feed systems that are sustainable, economically viable, and socially accepted across different Alpine regions. It contributes directly to SO 2.2 by piloting circular solutions, fostering behavioural change, and creating the conditions for policy harmonisation and market development.
The expected change is the emergence of circular feed value chains in rural and peri-urban Alpine areas, supported by practical tools, regulatory clarity, and stakeholder engagement. Outputs include a transnational policy brief and harmonisation roadmap, pilot insect demo units, the Alpine Insect Feed Toolbox and multilingual training materials.
Partnership from 5 Alpine Space countries is composed of academia, SMEs, business support and health authorities, capable of testing and uptake of developed solutions.
The transnational approach avoids fragmented national approaches and enables scalable, crossborder uptake.
