Abstract:
In the last decades of the 20th century, the climatic change in all the planet was one of the main topics studied
by the scientists. The increasing of average global temperature on earthly surface in the 20th century, the about 10%
reduction of the snowy cloak since 1960-1970 in no polar region glaciers and a reduction of the rainy days number, with
very intense rains, are indicators of this change. Groundwater can be affected by the climatic change: so increasing human
need can not be satisfied. In Vercelli Plain, located in the north-west of Piemonte (Italy), million of m3 of water are
canalized every year for rice cultivation, and it creates an important variation of shallow aquifer piezometric level. A
piezometric study in this area evidence a water table oscillation since 1968 to 2004, with a reduction of water table level up
to 1 metre. Moreover, in South-East sector of the plain, the gaining rivers present a decreasing water levels because of
groundwater withdrawal and climatic change. In this area reduction of the rains, increasing temperature and the intense use
of groundwater for human and industry needs are the causes of the groundwater variation.
