Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to present an analysis of the indirect translation of Inny Świat (1953), which Lidia Croce and Antonia Maresca, under the pseudonym Gaspare Magi, published in 1958, based on A World Apart (1951), the English translation carried out by the young translator Andrzej Ciołkosz. After examining the editorial history of the book as well as the Italian and English translations, the study proceeds with an analysis of the differences between the source, intermediary and target text, followed by an evaluation of the rendering of cultural references and gulag jargon. The concluding part of the article examines the critical issue of translating the style employed by Gustaw Herling-Grudziński in his most renowned work.
